Update from Carlos Ramírez of Puerto Rico at 4:36 PM Eastern Florida time on September 27. Aviculturists in Puerto Rico are in desperate a need for food. Fred Smith of the AFA is coordinating efforts and will provide greater details later. Carlos reports that the wild parrots took a significant blow, with thousands of Canary-winged and White-winged Parakeets dying in Metropolitan San Juan. The Blue and Gold Macaws have not been seen and their status as well as that of many other species is unknown. The birds are feeding on bark and tender shoots that are emerging from the primarily defoliated trees. He tells me that aid for the people is arriving.

The AFA DISASTER RELIEF Program has been helping many bird owners with food, water and shelter for their birds in the disaster areas. As we continue to focus on Texas, Florida and the fires out west, we are also focusing on the birds in Puerto Rico.
Now with Puerto Rico being so devastated, we need your help with donations more then ever.

Therefore we must get food there as soon as possible! We are working with key persons there as we assess their needs and means of transportation to get the supplies there.
There is also a desperate need to get food to those birds in the forest. Macaws, Cockatoo's, Amazon's as well as many finch and other species have little to no food left and may not survive unless we help them soon!
I ask that individuals, bird clubs, companies all help us as we focus on this huge need before us. If not us, then who will help save these birds?
